I know that futures are options (calls/puts) but when the number goes up before the market opens (on msnbc perhaps), does this mean that more people are buying calls ?

For instance, it’s 3/6/09 at 8:30 AM and the dow jones futures shows maybe UP 11% – what does that mean about the “futures” being bought ?
