What do people think of the Bernard Madoff 150 year sentence?

Bernard Madoff
Mr Hairball [retired] asked:

What do people think of the Bernard Madoff sentence? Is it long enough? Too short? Should there be other things that should happen like liquidating any & all assets? What is your view?

What I don’t understand is why give a 150 sentence? He won’t live that long.

Thats the least we can demand, The most we should demand is that the other (quantity unknown) cohorts should be dished out the same punishment; it takes many pockets to hide 50mgabucks

He’s too old to get that sentence, he should have been convicted 10 yrs ago!

I think its ok because short of killing him it ensures he’ll never leave the Prison alive..but they didn’t need 150 to do that did they? whats he got 30 yrs left if he’s lucky?

Seeing as he will be 221 years old by the time of his release it does seem a fair sentence.

I think the people he stole from should get all his money and assets. And yes I think that seems fair considering some people get life sentences for drugs when they are only destroying there own lives, he destroyed lots of peoples lives, and I think it’s ridiculous that his wife gets to keep all that money he stole.

He should spend every minute in a solitary cell with one slice of moldy bread a day.

I think the judge was grandstanding,15 years is a life sentence for him,he got way more time than most murderers, people kill children and get far less time.I guess because he stung a couple politicians that makes it more serious crime.

It’s a symbolic gesture, in effect saying that he was immeasurably bad and will therefore receive the longest sentence the law allows. He’ll spend the rest of his life in prison, not that it’ll be much consolation to those who lost everything. No he won’t be let out in a year, and yes all of the assets that can be found will go to the victims who, with bevies of lawyers, are squabbling lustily over what the ground rules for distribution should be.

Personally, I am in favor of the “darkened warehouse” approach, really! By that, I mean that he should be placed inside a darkened warehouse with a whole PILE of the people who he scammed. “They” (who ever the “authorities” are) should close the doors to this warehouse & turn their backs for . . . say . . an hour or so. Then open the doors & whatever is, just IS! Hmmmmm . . but then again, we might need a street sweeper & some big hoses to clean up the warehouse cause it might get kind of messy (OMGorsh!)

Not a strong enough sentence. How about eternity in prison?

I agree with those people who think 150 years is to long. The man isn’t
going to live that long.If you ask me,they should of sentenced him 30
years in prison. That way he’ll get out at 101 and if he’s still around, what’s
the worse he can do at 101?He’ll probably end up dying shortly after he
was released.Besides,150 years is more than what any serial killer
or rapist has ever gotten.Seems a bit unfair to me that a con man gets
a longer sentence than a murderer.
